About this listen

Can a modern-day hero defeat addiction?

Some people are born with seemingly limitless talent, be it in their intellectual capacities, athletic prowess, artistic abilities, or personal aplomb. Roland Hazzard is one of those rare individuals. Nothing should stand in his way.

Yet he suffers from one glaring deficiency—he can’t control and enjoy alcohol. His addiction threatens to destroy the promise of his many gifts.

Now fate throws Roland an opportunity that could change everything. A notorious serial killer is stalking a woman in his building and breaks into Roland’s apartment by mistake. Roland’s slaying of the monster makes him an instant celebrity and he cultivates an outrageous vigilante persona that, on the one hand, scorns the traditional news media and, on the other, spawns a huge internet following.

His fame attracts more violence, and the violence more attention, until Roland is in constant demand and making a lot of easy money.

Roland’s drunken behavior eventually gets him into serious trouble, and a secret crime from his past comes to light.

Will he overcome his self-destructive nature?

Or will the alcoholic sink into obscurity?

Great Redemption Story

The alcoholic is a sometimes dark story of redemption and the pains of addiction. It was incredibly well read by the author who did a great job of bringing the story to life and making it engaging. I was surprised how quickly I got through it considering the running time. If your a fan of a redemption stories this which be a great addition to the collection.

exhilaration and lots of introspection.

It's a great story. It's fun to read, but it also brings you exhilaration and lots of introspectin. The tension between Roland's public persona and his private demons made his character relatable and compelling. But where the novel went really well was in the underbelly of being famous, Roland getting so addicted that it became reckless, opening up a whole can of secret crimes that he had pulled. Suspense builds thicker and thicker as violent situations keep surfacing from left and right, keeping me literally on the edge of my chair. A reminder of both the greatness of man and his self-destruction, this is a book that begs to question addiction, fame, and just about the choices available in life.

This is a great book it's deep, it draws you in

This is a great book it's deep, it draws you into that world 25 hours long - addiction it's quite dark but it balances that with the other aspects of the book. it's a thriller really draws you into the characters they're developed with highs and lows, there's light and shade. I really enjoyed it so I would recommend it

Gripping, Gritty, and Surprisingly Deep – A Must-Read

This book took me by surprise in all the best ways. What starts as a story about addiction and inner demons quickly evolves into a powerful, fast-paced tale of redemption, consequence, and the complicated path to healing. Roland Hazzard is a deeply human character—flawed, brilliant, and heartbreakingly real. The writing pulls no punches, yet still carries a raw emotional honesty that lingers long after the final page. With sharp social commentary, unexpected twists, and a unique vigilante twist, this book goes far beyond the surface. It’s bold, thought-provoking, and absolutely worth the read.

Entertaining and hard to put down!

I really enjoyed listening to this book, adn it was quite difficult to put down! It is a story that explores talent, addiction, and redemption. The protagonist, Roland Hazzard, is a man of exceptional abilities whose life is overshadowed by his struggle with alcohol. Flanagan masterfully blends dark humor with introspective drama, which creates a story that is both entertaining and makes you think. The story protrays Roland's internal battles really well, and give the readers a great look into the complexities of addiction and the resilience of the human spirit. This book is a must-read for those seeking a deep and engaging story about personal triumph over adversity.

great listen

Roland is one of those guys who could have had it all but nah he went all in on booze instead. Dude accidentally kills a serial killer and that's wild, rides the internet fame wave and somehow manages to make his life even messier. The whole vigilante hero but also a trainwreck thing is fun until it isn't and his downward spiral is both frustrating and weirdly entertaining.
