About this listen

Five works in one collection. This audiobook of his treasured poetry collection walks you through a time when the American Experiment came to a new maturity; when the Transcendentalist Movement forever changed life and poetry.

Work 1: Leaves of Grass
Written as a compilation of poems in the mid-1800s celebrating humanity, the value of the human mind, and nature. These poems in this collection were heavily inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson, himself a romantic, and the Transcendentalist Movement that was popular at the time. While most of the poems offer praise to nature and a person’s relative role in it, the title itself, Leaves of Grass, is a pun minimizing the value of the very paper that they were written on.

Work 2: Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman's Letter Correspondence
The very complex relationship between Emerson and Whitman was publicly displayed in open letters that they had scribed to one another. Emerson, enthusiastically welcoming Whitman to his great career, made a very public proclamation of awe-inspiring praise to the poet.

Work 3: O Captain! My Captain!
Written about the death of President Abraham Lincoln, this poem emphasizes the grief and sorrow felt by the American people in the throes of mourning upon his assassination.

Work 4: When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d
Written in the summer of 1865 during the country’s profound national mourning over the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, this poem was a pastoral elegy referencing the recently concluded Civil War. Whitman uses imagery and symbols to describe the president, his death, and the emotional experience.

A Great Treat for any Whitman Fan

I've always loved the works of Whitman. My favorite of his, of course, "Leaves of Grass", his magnum opus which he spend most of his professional life tinkering on until his death. And I must say, that this audiobook does this work justice. The narration is enthralling and really adds a depth to this work that I could scarcely have imagined. If you're new to Whitman (shudder the thought!) or you are a lifelong aficionado as I am, this book will not disappoint. And absolute jewel.

Makes you feel connected to something bigger

I’ve read some of Whitman’s poems before, but hearing them out loud was a whole different experience. His words hit deeper, especially Leaves of Grass—it just feels more alive. The poems about Lincoln’s death were powerful too. If you want poetry that actually makes you feel something, this is worth a listen.

Not Here to Judge Whitman, Just the Audiobook

I’m not about to critique one of the greatest poets in American history. What I can say is that this audiobook does justice to his work. The narration is top-notch, and hearing his poetry aloud gives it a whole new level of depth. If you’ve only read Whitman on paper, you’re missing out.

GOOD

This audiobook is a nice mix of poems and history. It’s simple, emotional, and gives a good feel for Whitman’s style and the time he lived in. Worth a listen if you like classic poetry

A lot of Walt Whitman

If you are a fan of Walt Whitman this is probably the most comprehensive collection of works and extended information you can get. Thoroughly enjoyed and it was exceptionally well read.

love it

leaves of grass is Whitman doing his thing praising nature the human mind and whatever else he found awe inspiring. The lincoln poems hit hard, especially o captain my captain which is basically raw grief in verse. The letters with emerson are just two guys nerding out over poetry and the biography ties it all together. strong listen but only if you’re cool with poetry that goes on forever.

An interesting collection

An interesting collection. I found it enjoyable to have on in the background. I found the narration very slow.

A Beautiful Collection of Whitman’s Work

This collection is perfect for anyone who wants to dive into Walt Whitman’s poetry and learn more about his life. Leaves of Grass is such a classic, and having it alongside O Captain! My Captain! and other works makes this a well-rounded set. I also really enjoyed the biography and the letters between Whitman and Emerson—it gave great insight into his inspirations. If you love poetry that celebrates nature, humanity, and deep emotions, this is a fantastic collection to have!
