About this listen

The phenomenal fifth book in the Hunger Games series!

Acclaimed actor Jefferson White, who starred in Paramount Network's Yellowstone as Jimmy Hurdstrom, brings his talent to the worldwide best-selling Hunger Games series as narrator of the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook!

When you've been set up

to lose everything you love,

what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

Editorial Review

Cinna told me to listen to this
In 2012, my boyfriend (now husband) bought me a shirt that said Cinna told me to wear this, and I think that should tell you everything you need to know about my devotion to The Hunger Games franchise. The latest addition to the series, Sunrise on the Reaping, is something I didn’t even know I could hope for: Haymitch’s origin story. And my already high levels of anticipation for the release reached a fever-pitch when Jefferson White ( Yellowstone) was announced as the narrator, and we got to hear a sneak peek of his performance. We first met Haymitch as Katniss and Peeta’s mentor in Book 1, and since then all we could do was speculate about his own journey in the Hunger Games some 24 years before. In Sunrise on the Reaping we’ll get to meet a 16-year-old Haymitch (and perhaps the teenage versions of Katniss’s parents, Effie, and Cinna ... one can dream), and finally learn how the tenacious teen became the hardened man we all have a soft spot for. May the odds be ever in his favour. —Katie O., Audible Editor

Harrowing and gripping!

This book is by far the most harrowing and graphic of the hunger games series. I spent so much of this book sobbing! It’s soul crushing. But that to me is testament to how beautifully written it is. To be physically sobbing over fictional characters? Only an outstanding author can bring out all different personalities and make them tangible, relatable and loved or hated. I really don’t want to give any spoilers. But I feel I truly understand Haymitch now.
This was brought together with the fabulous performance of the narrator. He truly brought them to life so eloquently.

A great lsiten

Doesn't quite have the magic of the original trilogy however great addition to the books. Nice pay off at the ending and the book is a great addition to context for previous books.

Please do something enjoyable after reading

Just read the book. There’s nothing to be said, and bring some tissues because it’s going to be real.

Great narration

First off: SHUT UUUUUUUP!!! SHUT UP OH MY GODDDD!!! I swear to god, if I have to sit through one more word of quoth the raven, I will start a new hunger games where it’s just me and susanne collins in the arena. I get it was for dramatic/poetic effect or whatever, but good grief did it get old quickly. I ended up trying to skip through the poem segments purely because they were driving me insane.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I really enjoyed this narration, and it was infinitely better than the narration of the last book. The story was good, although I do think it kind of fell short and lost momentum at the end there, which also happened with the last book, but the story was still enjoyable overall. I think it might be my favourite in the series. The epilogue did feel like randomly tacked-on fan service though, and whilst I appreciate that it was to give a “happy ending” (or as happy an ending as you can get for this character), it did feel a bit unnecessary.

There was also a lot of “hey guys, remember this character? They’re all connected!” happening, which I also didn’t appreciate and also felt like fan service. Not every person in district 12 needs to be connected somehow, and it just felt eye roll-inducing, like when Lucy Grey mentions the katniss plant in the last book/film, for no reason other than to wink at the audience.

Overall, a good story, even with the parts I already knew due to their mention in the previous books, and there was a part that almost had me tearing up. Definitely the best narrator in the series, but that super drawn-out reading of quoth the raven in that last chapter had me begging for death more than haymitch.

Best book in the series

I lived how characters, old and new, were portrayed in this novel. Honestly made me cry at the end, "I love you like all-fire."

The performance from Jefferson White was amazing and I really believed he WAS Haymitch.

The story.

I loved how the book had traits and trinkets from the previous hunger games series and the other pre-quell. I always wanted a book based on hamich and this book succeeded my hopes. The narrator Jefferson White was another amazing narrator capturing the emotions throughout the story. This book was amazing and set light on the sunrise of the reaping. ❤️❤️❤️

Even Better than the Last One

I could tell the narrator was invested in the story. He had me in tears at one point. Haymitch’s life (before we first met him at 74th Games) was a rollercoaster of pain and sorrow that just gutted me to my core. This book had me gripped the whole way through. Fans of the Hunger Games will not be disappointed. Newcomers to the franchise will be inspired to explore the world of Panem, and the other 5 books.
