About this listen

How (Not) to Have an Arranged Marriage is written and read with poignant honesty by Dr Amir Khan, bestselling author of The Doctor Will See You Now. Heartwarming and hilarious, it follows the adventures of a young Muslim student doctor, torn between his traditional family and his whirlwind romance.

He’s the perfect catch (according to his mother). Yousef is the golden child to his strict Pakistani parents. As he finishes his medical degree in London, Yousef’s life appears to be mapped out for him: become a doctor, marry a suitable girl of his parents’ choosing and, above all, make his family proud. Then Yousef meets Jess.

A fellow medical student, Jess presents a complication to the plan. Suddenly, Yousef finds himself torn between two worlds – keeping each a secret from the other.

But, as graduation day looms, Yousef’s mother informs him that she’s started looking for his wife...

Dr Amir Khan is a resident doctor for ITV's Lorraine and Good Morning Britain. His debut fiction novel is a timely, heartfelt look at all aspects of modern arranged marriages.

Loved this book!

So enjoyed this book - best one in along time. Great characters, engaging storyline, informative around a different culture, beautifully read … I could go on!
This was one of those stories that totally draws you in and the delivery of it really enhanced this. As such though, it was over too quickly and leaves you wanting more! One of those you could envisage transferring to TV or film …
Looking forward to Dr Khan’s next book now 👏👏

Took a while to get into it

Over-all I enjoyed the book. It took me awhile to invest in the characters and was nearly stopped listening in the first few chapters but I’m glad I stuck with it. It developed into an interesting story and also very interesting to learn more about different cultures and traditions. This n times Amir’s delivery felt like he was reading to children. But overall enjoyable.

A funny story with lots of warmth & characters brought to life. Fascinating comparison between our cultures, highlighting our differences but also some similarities.
