Summary

The mesmerising new novel from the winner of the Costa Short Story Award, following her debut novel, Himself.

Maud Drennan - underpaid carer and unintentional psychic - is the latest in a long line of dogsbodies for the ancient, belligerent Cathal Flood. Yet despite her best efforts, Maud is drawn into the mysteries concealed in his filthy, once-grand home. She realises that Cathal, and the junk-filled rooms, are opening up to her.

With only her landlady and a troop of sarcastic ghostly saints to help, Maud must uncover what lies beneath Cathal's decades-old hostility and the strange activities of the house itself.

Brilliant narration and engaging story

I loved this book which was brilliantly narrated. The writing made me smile and the descriptions were like poetry in places. Listened to it over a weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great Craic!

Excellent piece of imaginative writing, and with the irreverent wit of the Irish, you will find yourself laughing at horrific situations. Hopefully you don’t have to be Irish to enjoy it.
I’ve just found my new favourite author.

poetic and beautiful

I have to say it took a while to get into as it's not my usual type of book. However, it's so well described it catches every sense, makinge laugh and cry with the characters. It won't be for everyone but I thought it was a gem and will read more from Jess.

Brilliant Listen!!

What a great book this is. Listened to it all the way through in one sitting, for want of a better word. A very engaging story which was narrated beautifully. A lot of Irish 'craic' between two of the main characters , I did laugh a lot, being Irish myself. The author writes beautifully and vividly. What an imagination! Would highly recommend this book. Enjoy, and don't mention it!

Enjoyable but what happened in the end?

I enjoyed this story, it was not what I was expecting but I thought it was really funny. The narration was excellent. I enjoyed the Saints. I really enjoyed Mr Flood and St Valentine who were particularly hilarious characters.
Although I lost focus at the end and I can’t understand what happened? Was there a proper ending?

well read but went on too long

enjoyable mostly with good characters but convoluted story that didnt justify the predictable ending. it also dragged a bit in the middle and i skipped forward quite large chunks.
not sure what the need for ghost saints was.
better ending would have been that some of the curiosities in floods collection were a body, especially the flayed man.

Brilliant, loved it.

I loved this book. Intriguing and engaging full of Bon mot and great turns of phrase. Beautifully read by (I think) a native Irish speaker. The best audiobook I’ve had for ages. OTs , health and social care staff may particularly enjoy......,.

Great twists & turns

Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, with plenty of paranormal events.
Great characters, very well written & beautifully narrated.

Beautiful narration for beautiful words!

Absolutely loved this! Probably my favourite narrator of an audiobook yet and Jess's writing is just incredible. Definitely a favourite read of 2018 for me - gothic, mysterious, slightly magical and brilliant humour at times too!
