Summary

Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard, who is drawn into the investigation.

Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

An intelligently written crime novel

I was initially put off this series by reviews saying it was sexist. I'm a 45 year old woman and I'm a bit baffled by this - I felt that there was as much objectification of men as of women. Men and women often think and speak differently, but that isn't sexism. I really enjoyed this book. I saw the biggest twist from very early on, but there are so many pointers to it that I can only assume that the author wanted the story to unfold that way. There was still plenty of uncertainty and interest, right up to the end. I found it refreshing to find a crime author who isn't trying to smugly prove his cleverness as opposed to his readers' stupidity - the Ellery Queen books irritate me no end with their insistence that you should be able to pick out the three relevent clues, only mentioned in passing, when other details are far from logical. I'll be reading more of this series.

A just above average read

This held my attention right the way through and I enjoyed the experience, although I'd vaguely guessed the *almost* unbelievable twist that came just before the end. I would have liked to get to know the protagonists a bit more by perhaps some social interplay between them; at the moment they are just people without personalities. However, I shall definitely put more Nick Louth books on my 'to read' list! Also, the narrator, Marston York, did his job in an excellent manner and, I think, turned this review into a 4 star when it may have been only 3.

Gripping story, brilliantly narrated

Excellent story with plenty of twists and a very cleverly constructed plot. Nick Louth credits many people at the end of the book for their technical advice and it showed all the signs of careful research. I was very impressed by the narrator's mastery of the considerable number of accents he was required to employ. Started to guess part of the ending before it arrived, but this didn't spoil the story for me. I will read more books by Mr Louth. Recommended.

Take no notice of the nay sayers, just enjoy

This is an excellent story, which is very well assembled with many different possible outcomes to divert the reader. The end result is both realistic, dramatic and entirely satisfying.

My advice is to ignore the sour, negative reviews that moan about "old tropes" and just enjoy this story :)

worth the time...….

This book was the first I have read by this author, I found it slow and complex to start but became a very compelling read. The book kept me reading until the end , I finished the book and was compelled enough to move onto the next book in this series looking forward to the read.
