Critic reviews

Eruption is extraordinary. It's the return of the big summer blockbuster but it is also something more – the first summer blockbuster masterpiece. Michael Crichton and James Patterson have come together to create a novel that is as thrilling and jaw-dropping as Jurassic Park. Every page of this novel features the best gifts of two writing giants. Full of suspense, frighteningly real and absolutely unforgettable (Don Winslow)
Flat-out incredible. Buckle up. This is heart-pounding storytelling at its finest. I dare you to try and put this amazing book down. It's Crichton-smart, Patterson-paced, incredibly cinematic and it just feels like a giant summer movie. Two of the bestselling storytellers of all time have come together to deliver a hugely entertaining techno-thriller adventure story (T.J. Newman)
Eruption features Michael Crichton's stunning knowledge of science, scientific speculation and edge-of-your-seat storytelling and Patterson's remarkable gifts for suspense and relentless pacing. The once-in-a-lifetime combination of Michael Crichton and James Patterson results is one of the most entertaining novels I've read in years. You will be absolutely riveted as you turn every page (Adrian McKinty)

Weirdly inept reading

There's nothing much wrong with the book itself, although the volcano facts and figures feel shoehorned into the action.

However, there's no escaping the fact that the reading is extraordinarily poor, stumbling over words and phrases with strange nonsensical pauses throughout. This makes for a really painful listen.

I expected better from these two!

If you want a 'ripping yarn' for holiday reading, and don't expect too much, this will probably do for you but when I say holiday READING......that's exactly what I mean because the narrator is so awful I found it difficult to listen. Surely two authors of experience and fame could afford to have their books read by someone better? Buy the kindle version or a paperback and enjoy loads of people getting killed by a volcano whilst the hero saves the world from something far more deadly.

Better than reviews

At first having bought the book on pre-order I was disappointed by the potential read from the reviews given so far. Nevertheless I listened to the book and enjoyed the content. However as the story was read so slowly I would add a caveat in that I had the reading speed at 2 times faster than origional to make the listening work for me.

I made it to chapter 8.

I don’t know if it’s Patterson taking over from Crichton, or Clarke Peters’ narration, but I found this very hard going, even though I only got a few chapters in.

Peters sounds like he’s either reading the book for the first time, or is reading through bifocals, with pauses and changes in the rhythm of the narration seeming to indicate getting to the end of a new page and adjusting focal distance to the top of the next.

Audible, please put some time in on getting the original Crichton books recorded/uploaded such as Airframe, and possibly get a producer to sit in on the recording sessions.

Eruption by Michael Crichton

The highly anticipated thriller from the two icons certainly delivers. Awesome book, and I hope it becomes a film. Good narrator.

the narration was unbearable.

I got up to chapter 2, I couldn't get past the narration, I'm not sure if it's the narrator or the editing.

A really good liisten.

This is definitely a Michael Crichton story. I think that James Patterson's only contribition was some updating. Since I am a huge Crichton fan I really enjoyed this. The narrator was generally good but there were several strange hesitations that spoiled it slightly, just seemed odd.

Stick With It

really enjoyed this, great company for a long drive down to Devon. It takes a little bit of getting in to, there's a lot of characters, and a confusing time jump at the beginning, but overall it's a good listen. Enjoyed the narrator, he also takes a bit of getting used to, but it's worth sticking with it.

Really terrible

The narration is so poor it’s as if the narrator was reading from his phone - it’s totally distracting and should never have been passed as ok. As to the story, it’s average but again, hard to tell given the awful narration. It’s genuinely one of the worst audiobooks I’ve listened to and I struggled to finish it.

Too difficult to listen to.

I imagine there’s a back story to why this performance has been published as it is but what starts out as a slightly odd delivery, eventually (10 chapters) becomes too distracting and irritating to listen to.
